Amazingly, 2014 is nearly over, and it is time once again for our fall wine tasting event. Join us for a relaxing afternoon of wine tasting at Jalama Wines, a boutique winery in the wine “ghetto” of Lompoc. Jalama’s prize winning wines will be paired with the fabulous cooking of section officers, all chemists, of course. Symposium on Careers in Medicinal Chemistry
CALPACS invites you to join a symposium about careers in medicinal chemistry. Industry speakers will talk about all the opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry and how one can make the transition from a graduate program to any one of these career paths. The symposium is “Designed by Chemists New to the Industry to Introduce New Chemists to the Industry!”

Poetry Contest Winners for 2013
“Nanotechnology: The Smallest BIG Idea in Science” Illustrated Poem Contest
As part of National Chemistry Week activities, the American Chemical Society sponsored an illustrated poem contest for students K-12. All poems were to be no more than 40 words in various styles: haiku, limerick, ode, ABC poem, free verse, end rhyme, or blank verse. Entries were judged based upon relevance to and incorporation of the NCW theme, word choice and imagery, colorful artwork, adherence to poem style, originality and creativity, and overall presentation.
Our NCW section coordinator and poetry contest judge, Lara Baxley, reached out to local schools, inviting their students to submit poems. She received entries for the 3rd-5th grade and the 6th-8th grade categories.

ACS Rising Star Rising Star Award Nominations
CALL FOR RISING STAR AWARD NOMINATIONS
The ACS has put out a call for nominations for the 2013 Rising Star Awards from the Women Chemists Committee (WCC). This is a relatively new award category, designed to recognize the contributions of 10 outstanding mid-career women scientists. Maybe you know someone who should be nominated! Here is a brief summary of who may qualify for this award (from the ACS website):
“The award is open to all female ACS members in chemistry and chemical engineering working in academic, industrial, government, non-profit or other employment sectors. Appropriate candidates will typically be no more than 15 years from receipt of their terminal scientific degree and have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions to their respective fields. Applicants can either be self-nominated or can be nominated by another individual for this award.”
