In 1998 Veeco bought Digital Instruments, a company founded by UC Santa Barbara Professor Virgil Elings, and that acquisition became Veeco’s Goleta-based Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)business. Veeco is a leading provider of AFMs, scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) and fast 3D optical microscopes to the research and industrial community
